Queen Bodega

Queen Bodega is a cafe that opened in Fitzroy North in 2023 after the space had been left vacant for a number of years. The previous cafe in this space had survived for a long time selling "old style" coffee and cakes but when COVID hit they closed down. It was never really my cup of tea (of coffee in this case) so, whilst I was upset for the owners and all those who suffered in this way during COVID-19, I was hopeful that someone else would step up and provide a great cafe experience. Whilst I'm not sure Queen Bodega offers anything out of the ordinary - in fact I had previously described it as very plain to my partner - they do make good coffee and the breakfast roll (aka Egga and Bacon roll) I purchased was pretty good!

made with a brioche bun (not my favourite, but some seem to like it) it contained an excellent amount of bacon with an egg that was just soft enough to provide a covering of saucy goodness between the bun. Spinach is added so you can tell yourself it's healthy and a good dose of mayonnaise on the base of the roll. Overall, it won't win any awards from eggbaconroll.com, but it is a solid breakfast roll and worth the 12.50 they charge (cheap in this area). In fact, all the pricing at Queen Boedga is relatively inexpensive (when compared to other places around Fitzroy North. Overall, worth checking out if you are looking for a new place to visit close to Fitzroy North.

If you read my review from Two Bob you will see that these rolls are very similar - not sure if they all come from an outside source rather than being put together by the cafe but the Queen Bodega roll just pipped the Two Bob roll by a couple of points.

Scores:

Roll: Brioche roll only ever scores 6/10 for me.

Egg: Egg was done perfectly, a little yoke just slipping off the back of the bun for mopping up later, 9/10

Bacon: Bacon was done well and with the exact right amount, 9.5/10

Presentation: Well presented, though it was given to me in a paper bag as a takeaway, so not sure how they would normally present it on the plate! But a nice thick napkin to wipe the gooey egg from your mouth and well wrapped in branded wax paper. 8/10

Other: They add spinach which I am usually okay with and it definitely was not too much so didn't take away from the other flavours or overpower. There was a mayonnaise sauce which was ok, but perhaps a little heavy-handed, they get 5/10 for other.

Grand total: 37.5/50
